Metabolic and endocrine disorders

Prediabetes and type 1 and 2 diabetes

Three distinct conditions with similar names and different treatment. Nutrition is not the same in each.

In prediabetes the goal is reversal: there is genuine room to return to normal values and avoid the diagnosis. In type 2 diabetes the goal is control and, in many selected cases, remission. In type 1 diabetes reversal is not possible, and nutritional work centres on carbohydrate counting, insulin timing and protection of muscle mass.

What they share is that muscle is the main ally. It is where most circulating glucose is disposed of, and it is the first thing lost when weight loss is done badly or too fast.

  • Carbohydrate counting and synchronisation with drug treatment
  • HbA1c, glucose and insulin interpreted together
  • Skeletal muscle mass monitored throughout weight loss
  • Simultaneous management of dyslipidaemia and hypertension when they coexist
  • Coordination with your physician; medication is never prescribed or withdrawn here

This page is educational material from a registered dietitian, not a diagnostic tool. Diagnosis and medical treatment are your doctor’s remit; clinical nutrition accompanies that treatment, it does not replace it.

Frequently asked questions

That decision belongs exclusively to your doctor. What does frequently happen is that, as control improves, your doctor adjusts doses. My role is to give them objective body composition and adherence data so that decision is better informed.

There is no single one. There is your plan, built on your medication, your schedule, your activity and your preferences. The generic 1200 or 1500 calorie diets circulating online ignore precisely what determines the outcome.
